AirTran to start flights to Punta Cana

The Orlando-based AirTran has been operating charter flights to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic from other cities in the United States, but it plans to operate regularly scheduled flights to Punta Cana from Atlanta.

The carrier is seeking approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fly the route as little as twice weekly or as often as daily, depending on the time of year. AirTrans feels that it is experienced enough in regulatory agencies and operations in Punta Cana in order to take on this new route. The new route would be part of its expansion in the Caribbean, where it also flies to Montego Bay, Aruba and Nassau.
